3 Data Backup Myths That Cost People Their Files

Cloud sync isn't a backup, external drives fail, and 'I'll do it later' is the most expensive backup strategy. We bust the biggest myths.

We recover lost data for customers across Delaware County every week, and almost every case started with a backup belief that turned out to be a myth. Here are the three we hear most often at GSK Technologies in Folsom — and what actually works.

Myth 1: 'I use Google Drive / iCloud / Dropbox, so I'm backed up.'

Cloud sync is not a backup. Sync mirrors your files — so if you accidentally delete a file on your computer, it gets deleted in the cloud too. If ransomware encrypts your local files, many sync services faithfully upload the encrypted versions. Real backup keeps snapshots — previous versions you can roll back to — and keeps at least one copy that isn't continuously synced. For DELCO homes and businesses, we set up automated local backup plus a separate cloud backup that retains version history.

Myth 2: 'My external drive is my backup.'

An external drive is a copy, not a backup strategy. External drives fail just like internal drives — they're the same hardware in a different box. If it lives next to your computer and never gets unplugged, a power surge, theft, or fire takes both out together. A backup drive should be disconnected when not actively backing up, rotated with a second drive kept off-site, and periodically tested to confirm it actually restores.

Myth 3: 'I'll set up backups later.'

This is the most expensive myth of all. Data loss doesn't send a warning. The drive that was fine yesterday clicks once and is gone today. We've recovered photos, tax records, and years of business documents for families and businesses across DELCO who all said the same thing: 'I was going to back it up this weekend.' Set it up now, automate it, and verify it restores at least once.

What real backup looks like

Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one copy off-site. For most Delaware County customers, that means the original on your computer, an automated local backup to an external drive, and a cloud backup with version history. We help homes and businesses set this up correctly — and, if the worst already happened, we offer professional data recovery in our Folsom shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Can you recover data from a failed hard drive in Delaware County?

In many cases, yes. We perform data recovery at our Folsom shop for failed drives, corrupted partitions, and accidentally deleted files. For physically damaged drives requiring clean-room recovery, we help you choose a trusted specialist. A free diagnostic tells you what's recoverable and what it costs.

Q.How much does data recovery cost in DELCO?

Logical recovery (deleted files, corrupted partitions, formatted drives) is typically affordable. Mechanical recovery (clicking, dead drives) costs more because it may require specialist clean-room work. We give you a clear quote after the free diagnostic before any recovery begins.

Q.Is iCloud or Google Drive enough to protect my files?

Not on its own. Cloud sync can propagate deletions and ransomware-encrypted files. Pair it with a local backup that keeps version history, and keep at least one copy that isn't continuously synced. We can set up a complete 3-2-1 backup for you.
